Chapter - 6.1                                                < Chapter - 5.0

Part - 1

Animal classification:-

Revision of living organism presents around us mainly plants and animals.

  • There are various types of animal around us.
  • Some animals are big some are small.
  • Some are terrestrial   where some are aquatic
  • Some animals crawl on land, some swim in water, some fly in air.
  • Some animals have scales on their body some have feathers or hairs.
  • Huge diversity among animals are there
  • Animal species on earth is approximately 7 millions.

History of around classification:-

  • Greek philosopher Aristole was the first to perform the animal classification.
  • Aristole classified the animal according to body size , habits and  habitats
  • Classification proposed by Aristotle is known as 'Artificial method'.
  • Followed by the Theophrastus , Pliny , John Ray , Linnaeus
  • Classification was based on various criteria like body organization types cells, chromosomes , bio-chemical properties.

Traditional method of animal classification :-Depending upon presence or absence of notochord the animal kingdom has been divided into two groups non- chordates and chordates.

A (A) Non chordates :-

1)    Body is not supported by rod like  notochord

2)    Pharyngeal gill–slits are absent.

3)    Never chord, if present, it is on ventral side .it is solid and paired.

4)    Heart, if present, it is on dorsal side.

B (B)   Chordates  :-

1)    Body is supported by notochord.

2)    Pharyngeal gill –slits or lungs are present for respiration.

3)    Nerve chord is present on ventral side of body.

According to Robert Whittaker all multicellular are included in kingdom animals.

This system is classified on the basis of body organization, body symmetry, body cavity germinal layers, segmentation etc.

Criteria for new system of classification:-

A)    Grades of organization

B)    Body symmetry

C)    Germ layers :- Diploblastic and triploblastic

D)   Body cavity  (Coelom)

E)     Body segmentation

Phyhum – Porifera:-

  • Sponges – bear numerous pores .Pores are called as ‘Ostia’ and ‘Oscula’
  • Aquatic animals
  • Animals have asymmetrical body .
  • Special types of cells – collar cells.
  • Spiculus made up of calcium carbonate or silica
  • Water is taken in through Ostia, and given out through Oscula .
  • Animal reproduce by budding sexual method.( eg. Sycon , Euspongia,  Hyalonema, Euplectella ,etc.)

Phylum – Coelenterata / Cnidaria:-

  • Body of animals is cylindrical umbrella like.
  • Cylindrical called as ‘Polyp’umbrella like called as ‘Medusa’ .
  • Body is symmetrical or diploblastic.
  • Cnidoblast bearing tentacles are present around the mouth.
(eg. Hydra Adamsia (sea anemone) Physalia (Portuguese –man- of war) Aurelia ( jelly fish ) , corals etc.

Phylum – Platyhelminthes:-

  • Body slender and flat like a leaf or strip hence called flat worms.
  • Endo parasites
  • Body is acoelomate  & bilaterally symmetrical
  • Triploblasitc
  • Male and female reproductive system are present in the same animal body.
    (eg. Planaria , liverfluke, tapeworm,etc.)

Phylum Aschelminthes:-

  • Body   long thread like or cylindrical called as round worms.
  • Aquatic or terrestrial
  • Triploblastic and pseudocoelomate.
  • Non segmented covered by tough cuticle.
  • Animals are unisexual.
(Eg. Ascaris, Filarial worm, Loa loa  Eye worm) etc.
